Academic Programme | 2007-2008
Rocklyn Academy is a school driven by student-centered learning. Much of the teaching is directed at helping students develop their learning skills. The format is more tutorial style rather than classroom style. The student/teacher ratio is approximately 3:1.

Where available, all compulsory courses are offered at the Academic (Grade 9/10), University or University/College (Grade 11/12) level, as set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

Elements of the Academic Program

  • Report Cards and Study Management Index Reports
  • Each semester, a mid-semester report card and a final report card are prepared and sent to parents. Copies of these report cards are placed in the OSR of each student.
  • As well, a report called Study Management Index, describing the study habits of each student, is presented to the students every 3 weeks.
    • The Study Management Index reports measure the timeliness and completeness of assigned work that is submitted.

Guidance and Career Education

  • Rocklyn Academy has a guidance counsellor who works with students in the preparation of post secondary applications, post secondary school selection and career guidance.
  • Students are also coached on preparing and writing College Board entrance tests, such as the SAT and ACT.
    • These tests are often required for admittance into U.S. colleges and universities.

Remedial Programs

  • Remedial assistance is offered to all students on an on-going basis in three separate ways.
    • Since class sizes at Rocklyn are very small, the teacher of the course can sometimes offer in-class remedial help during class time.
    • As well, extra help is available during the second half of the lunch hour on a one-on-one basis, when requested by the student.
    • Finally, remedial help is sometimes offered during Study Hall (Monday – Thursday, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.) as well as during Extra Study (Monday – Thursday, 4:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.).
  • Extra Study is part of the Study Management System, as outlined in Part A above.
    • Students who do not meet due dates are obliged to attend Extra Study until they are back on pace with assigned work in the course.
